Notifications don't have sounds.

Sarah Snyder -

If you see a claim card or push notification appear on your screen, you should also hear a ding sound. If you don't, here are a few things to try to fix the problem:

1. Make sure your ringer volume is up.

Notifications have a different volume setting than things like talking to students or watching videos. Sometimes their volume gets turned down without you realizing it.

Here's one way to fix this:

  • Click the home button on your iPad to exit any apps.
  • Turn up the volume using the buttons on the side of your iPad.

Here's another option:

  • Open iPad Settings.
  • Click "Sounds" on the left.
  • On the right, make sure your Ringer and Alerts volume is up.

2. Make sure Do Not Disturb is off.

Tutors turn this on by accident on occasion. It mutes all of your notifications, but won't affect volume in a session or for things like playing music or watching videos.

Here's one way to turn off Do Not Disturb:

  • Open your iPad Control Center by pulling it up from the bottom of the screen.
  • Do Not Disturb is the icon with the crescent moon. Tap it to turn it on or off.

Here's another option for managing Do Not Disturb:

  • Open your iPad Settings.
  • Click Do Not Disturb on the left.
  • On the right, make sure "Manual" is off and that the current time is not part of any scheduled Do Not Disturb times.

3. Make sure your iPad mute switch is off.

Most iPads have a switch on the side which mutes notification sounds. If the red dot is showing, notifications are muted and won't have sounds. Flip the switch to fix it!

4. Double check your notification settings.

It's rare that your notifications settings get changed, but that is another option.

Here's how to check those:

  • Open your iPad Settings.
  • On the left, click "Notifications."
  • On the right, select "MathTutor."
  • Make sure that Notifications and Sounds are both on.

5. Make sure your sounds aren't going somewhere else.

It sounds silly, but more than one tutor has reported not getting notification sounds when it turned out that they were connected to a Bluetooth headset without realizing it. The easiest way to check this is to turn off Bluetooth on your device and see if the sounds come back.

6. If it's still not working...

If you've checked all of these things and still aren't getting notification sounds, talk to Chance or Sarah.
