Most of the great stuff in the app happens inside the Whiteboard!
We have a lot of great tools in our whiteboard to make it easy to create great notes while working with students!
This pen is design for handwriting. It has a stylized line that makes writing look nicer, but can be difficult for drawing or graphing. You can change pen width and color using the options that appear beneath the calligraphy pen when it is selected.
This pen is easier for drawing and graphing. It produces a line of consistent width, no matter which direction you draw. You can change pen width and color using the options that appear beneath the regular pen when it is selected.
Our highlighter works exactly like a real highlighter, allowing you to emphasize an area of the page and still see any writing or diagrams behind it. You can change highlighter width and color using the options that appear beneath the highlighter when it is selected.
Eraser and Clear Page
The eraser will erase any writing – yours or your student’s. It does not erase pictures. You can change the eraser width by selecting from the options that appear beneath the eraser when it is selected. If you erase something accidentally, you can use “Undo” to get it back.
Along with the eraser width options, a “clear page” button appears when the eraser is selected. Choosing this option will delete everything on the current page, including pictures. Clearing the page cannot be undone.
This will only undo your actions. Students have their own undo button to undo their mistakes. Important note: Undo does not work for "clear page."
This reverts the last undo action.
Pictures in the Whiteboard
Most sessions start with a pre-loaded student image, and both students and tutors can upload additional photos during a session. There are also options to manipulate any photos in a session.
This tool allows tutors and students to add photos to the whiteboard, either from the camera app or from their library.
When you take or upload a photo, you can crop it to the portion of the picture which you'd like to use before uploading that image. Move the corners to select the portion of the image you'd like to use. Tap the Place button when you're done.
Editing and Moving Pictures
Pressing and holding on a picture will select the image (indicated by the blue border and selection handles). You can then drag the picture to a new location on the screen or change its size by dragging the handles at the corners.
You will also have the option to delete, rotate, or copy a photo when it is selected. Just tap the option you want in the black menu box at the edge of the photo.
When you are finished moving or changing a photo, you can tap Done on the photo menu or just tap anywhere away from the photo on the whiteboard.
Press and hold on a picture to copy it as shown above. You can also copy pictures from the web or elsewhere on your iPad to Paste into the whiteboard.
To paste, press and hold where you'd like to paste the copied image until you see the "Paste" button appear. Tap it to paste your image. After an image has been pasted, you can select it to move, rotate, or resize the image.
Pages in the Whiteboard
One great thing about MathElf being digital is that we have an infinite number of pages to work with! You can easily create new pages and navigate between pages in a session. Students love to look back at their past notes, so make sure to create new pages instead of erasing when you run out of room!
You can create a new page by clicking the + in the upper right corner. Switch between pages using the arrows on either side of the page numbers.
Only tutors can create or change pages. Students do not have this ability. When you move to a new page, your student will automatically be brought to that page with you!
If you want to look at an old page without disrupting the student or moving them to that page, you can click on the page numbers in the upper right corner to open the Page Map, which displays previews of all pages in your current session. You can also move directly to a particular page by clicking on it in the Page Map.
The Palm Rest can be found at the bottom edge of the whiteboard. You can move it by dragging the tab. You can also quickly pop it up to the top or down to the bottom of the screen by tapping the edges of the tab (where the grips are).
The Palm Rest allows you to rest your wrist and palm while you are writing on the screen. As you write, the palm rest will automatically move down the page, allowing you to continue writing without having to constantly reposition it.
It is partially transparent so that you can still see any writing beneath the area covered by the palm rest.
The palm rest on your screen does not show up on the student's screen. Students, by default, do not see their palm rest. They can turn it on in their Whiteboard Settings. Student and tutor palm rests operate independently of one another.
In the whiteboard, you have a lot of settings options. Click the gear along the top edge of the screen to open the Settings menu.
Paper type gives you the option of changing the background of a page to graph paper, lined paper, or even landscape lined paper. This can be incredibly helpful while working with students!
Revert to pen after erasing lets you decide how you want the eraser to work. If this switch is on, when you pick up your stylus after erasing, you will automatically return to the last pen or highlighter you were using, without having to select it. If this switch is off, you will stay in eraser mode until you select a pen.
Lefty mode moves all of the tools to the right side of the screen to make life easier for left-handed users. It does not change the student’s setup when a tutor uses lefty mode.
Show palm rest gives you the option of disabling the palm rest if you'd prefer not to use it.
You can zoom in and out on your current page using a two-finger pinching motion, like you would to zoom on images or maps on a typical touch screen device. Zooming your page does not change the student’s view.
While you are zoomed in, you can move to a different portion of the page by dragging it with two fingers.
When a student zooms in on a portion of his or her screen, the part of the screen which is still visible to the student will appear normally on your screen, and everything else will appear yellow-orange. You can still write anywhere on the screen, but be aware that your student cannot see it. If the student cannot find where you are writing, suggest that they zoom all the way out!
Here are examples of what your screen will look like when the student zooms in:
Your student's remaining minutes are displayed in a circle along the top toolbar.
Minutes count down showing how much time is left. The circle will change to yellow when the student has 5 minutes remaining and to red when they’re down to 2 minutes. Minutes will update when your student buys minutes.
When you work with a student who is using an iPad, the page will be the full width of your screen. For students using iPhones or iPods, your page width will adjust to match their screen width/height ratio, and you'll see a grey space on the right edge of your screen.
Other Whiteboard Buttons and Features
The whiteboard is full of other buttons and features which are helpful during a session!
Click this button when you want to end a session. This button is only present when you are connected with a student in a session.
This mutes your microphone. It’s handy when you need to cough or remind your dog that the mail carrier isn’t going to invade your home. When the microphone is muted, the button will change to a microphone with a line through it, and the word “muted” will appear beneath it. Click the microphone again to unmute. Important note: Only tutors have the mute button. Students do not have any way to mute their audio.
These circles, called avatars, represent you and the student during a session.
You can click on your avatar to see your tutor profile as it is displayed to students.
You can click on the student's avatar to see information about your student during a session.
The student avatar will display the following information:
- Student name
- Student Course
- If this is a new student
- If this student was referred to MathElf by you
- Student's country
- Number of minutes remaining on the student's account
- Date of your last session with this student, if you have previously worked together
Student avatars change when a tutor or student disconnects from the whiteboard or audio. A red exclamation point or dancing dots may be displayed in place of the student's initials.
While the remaining minutes count down, the session duration timer in the top toolbar will count up to let you know how long this session has lasted.
This opens a menu where you can export/share your session by printing, emailing, air dropping, etc. It creates a *.pdf of your file and may take a little bit to load for longer sessions.
If you open an old session or use the Scratchpad, you will see this button in the upper left corner of the screen. This will take you out of the Whiteboard.
After your session ends, you'll see the feedback screen. Here, you can tell MathElf HQ anything important about your session or take needed actions such as refunding or banning a student.
If you couldn't help the student, flip the refund toggle. This refunds all of your student's minutes and reduces your session pay to 1 or 2 minutes, depending on session length. Click here for more details on refunds.
If your student was problematic, check the box. Once you do, you'll see the option to ban that student in place of the refund toggle. Flip the switch before you submit your feedback to ban inappropriate students from MathElf. Banning students should be used for any activity that would get a student sent to the principal's office in school.
